All About Preschool

Welcome to West Elementary Preschool!
We are proud to offer high-quality preschool programming for 4-year-old children, Monday through Friday, as part of the Iowa Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program (SWVPP). Our nurturing environment and developmentally appropriate curriculum are designed to support your child’s growth, curiosity, and readiness for kindergarten — all while fostering a love of learning every day.

We look forward to sharing more information with you about our preschool programming below!

  • Do you offer before or after school care?
We do not offer before or after school care for our preschool students.

When students enter transitional kindergraten or kindergarten the following year, they will have access to Kids Club, our after school program, free of charge from 3:15pm-5:30pm.

When will I find out my student’s teacher?
Your student’s teacher will reach out in late July or early August to introduce themsleves! Watch for an email and information to arrange a Meet and Greet prior to school.

When and where do we drop-off & pick-up? Or can my student ride the bus?
Preschool students are able to ride the bus! If this is something you’re interested in, please feel free to contact the bus barn after you register your student in August to arrange this (563-568-4580 ext. #7).

If you’ll be bringing your student in the morning, please note that the doors to West Elementary do not open until 8:00AM. Once doors open, you may walk your student in or to their locker or let them do it on their own. We have many staff around to assist if student’s are wary. Students can enter through the sliding doors on the side of the building or through the front doors by the office.  Parents/guardians can enter the building until 8:20. If your student comes after this time, we’ll walk them to their locker and they must check-in at the front office.

Preschool students can be picked up starting at 3:00PM by the front, office doors. Families will wait outside and we will release your student to you (or those on your pick-up list) when we see you.

  • Pre-registration for the upcoming school year typically begins in January. This process is completed online using a Google Form, which will be shared on the Allamakee Community School District website and Facebook page.

Pre-registration is an important first step in reserving your child’s spot for the next school year. Once submitted, you’ll receive helpful email updates to guide you through the next steps in the enrollment process.

By pre-registering early, you help us plan ahead for staffing, curriculum, and welcoming new families to our school community.

  • To participate in our preschool program at West Elementary, children must be 4 years old by September 15 of the school year they're enrolling in. If your student is not 4 years old and you are in need of programming options, please feel free to call the West Elementary office, and we can point you in the right direction as both of our collaborative partners (Growing Bear & St. Patrick’s School) offer 3 year old programming.

  • To begin your child’s school journey with us, we need to verify their birthdate. You can do this by bringing in a copy of their birth certificate or immunization record. If it’s easier, you’re also welcome to send us an electronic copy of the birth certificate.

Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions!

  • Online registration will occur in August for all Allamakee Community School District students.

All students must be registered each year using PowerSchool. This allows for families to update information and agreements with ease.

You can register on-site with assistance at our Help Desk on August 12, 2025.
